Bei Kuo S/S15 proves design doesn’t have to be loud to speak volumes. More artist than fashion designer, Bei Kuo’s work is highly conceptual, inspired by personal experience and influences from both East and West. At first glance, minimalism, muted tones and futuristic fabrics rule the collection- named Tomorrow is the End of the World- giving an otherworldly feel. Structured neoprene and reflective metallics are cut to exaggerate the shoulder, thigh or neck, and skim the body as if to mystify the form beneath. Look closer and the enigma is extended by the ubiquitous embossment of ‘You do not exist’ in English and Mandarin. One could analyse that in Bei Kuo’s imaginary world, it is gender that is non-existent; neither masculine nor feminine (nor designed specifically for either sex) the collection just IS. Bei Kuo’s first collection since her graduation from Parson’s, New York, Tomorrow is the End of the World solidifies the Taiwanese designer’s place as one of the industry’s most exciting emerging talents to watch.
