Whether graphic prints, stark contrasting blocking or checked dresses the spring runways proved that everything really does look better in black and white. Occasionally a trend resurfaces for spring/summer that seems radically different from the usual floral prints, pastel colours and lacy summer tops. This trend changes the way we look at next season’s trends.

For spring a radical shift took place this year starting with New York Fashion Week. Marc Jacobs kicked it off by sending out a heavy dose of monochrome. Other designers who followed in his footsteps were Diane Von Furstenberg who gave us floral black and white simplistic chic dresses. It is clear that the shard distillation of monochrome would be the stand out trend for this year. This is a trend to have fun with, it does not mean just black and white but it’s the art of contrast, which can extend from your wardrobe to your home inspiration. Black and white has been a classic piece to invest in since Coco Chanel gave us the little black dress, it should be a staple in your wardrobe – now it’s more modernized.

Monochrome is not only for women it works well in men’s wardrobes, so gentlemen do not be afraid to experiment with this trend also.

I’ve always found black and white has been an instant slimmer, with the ability to distract the eye and create drama. So goodbye diets and hello to sophisticated monochrome! This is an easy look to create, by simply taking staple pieces from your wardrobe and updating them with chic new silhouettes.

For an easy-to-wear everyday look try out boyfriend knits or embellished cardigans, not only for instant warmth but when teamed with slim leg cropped trousers and stilettos they create a glamorous look. For special occasions try the peplum, creating curves and structure, strut out in a stylish LBD or alternatively choose a ponte skirt with a fresh white blouse from your wardrobe. The trouser suit is also causing a stir. Go for paneled trousers to create slimming silhouettes, with a patent court for extra leg length. If power dressing isn’t for you then team with pretty lace blouses for an instant feminine touch instead.
