A few years ago, when Georgas was first toting her guitar amidst the Vancouver music scene, she was known for her acoustic leanings. Then, the more intricate production backing the luscious vocals of her nascent recordings led to comparisons to Canada’s most favoured musical export, Feist. But, with Hannah Georgas – heavy on the electronics, not the electronic – Georgas has found a new means of re-wiring her essentially singer/songwriter sensibility into complex studio soundscapes.
Hannah Georgas will support City and Colour on his upcoming nine-date UK tour, including London Hammersmith Apollo on January 31, 2014, ahead of her new single ‘Enemies’, to be released on February 10th. The live shows come off the back of the UK release of Georgas’ new album Hannah Georgas (out now on Dine Alone Records) CHASSEUR caught up with the Canadian native before she embarks on her UK tour.
Your new, self-titled album is described as traditional meets electronic. Was it a natural progression or a conscious decision to break new ground?
I’m always trying to challenge myself and progress as an artist. I was experimenting a lot with electronic elements in my writing and demo process. I’m a huge fan of Graham Walsh’s work and love the textural landscapes that he creates with his music. It felt natural for me to move forward in the direction I took and to work with him.
You were nominated for both songwriter of the Year and Alternative Album of the year at the 2013 Juno awards. That must have been pretty cool?
It’s an honour to be nominated amongst all of the talented Canadian artists and records of 2013. It definitely feels pretty special and I’m thankful that I can be part of it all.
You’re heading to Europe early next year. Excited?
Yes! Super excited to head back. These shows are going to be a lot of fun and I’m pumped to open for City and Colour.
Any festival plans? You can tell us, we are great with secrets!
I may come back for a couple of festivals in the spring and summer! I can’t reveal it quite yet because I’m still sorting out my schedule! I’ll keep ya posted.
The keen-eyed among us spotted some tattoos. Care to elaborate?
I do have one tattoo on the inside of my left arm. It’s a snippet of the score for All You Need Is Love by The Beatles. Profound words to live by.
