Goodbye Horses is made up of a collective of photographers who immerse themselves in the dualities and contrasts of being young and frolicsome. Capturing their very own creation of different backdrops and personalities in their unusual experiences on the road, documentation has never been this real or this relative. Allow these image makers Theo Gosselin, Yougo Jeberg, Emmanuel Rosario, Lucas Hauchard and Marvin Morisse Maclean to be wild, to be free. Let them see beauty while we appreciate their voyeurism.
Lifestyle photography is best described by opinion and relativity. What’s your take on it?
It is true that lifestyle photography is described by opinion and relativity, and our story is not any different. We move to capture the everyday and the life we lived on the road. We hope that everyone can relate to our lives in one way or another.
The portraits conveyed in your photo series exhume a personal meaning and connection to the photographer. Are these individuals close friends of yours or have you met them along the way?
Most of the photographs you see are of us. We documented each other and those we met along the road. We are grateful for the many wonderful people we met while on the road because everyone was special and helped us out in their own special way. So we tried to photograph to remember and forever keep them with us.
Is there any particular subject matter that intrigues you immediately?
We are five guys of nature, and the world. We love everyone and everything. There is beauty in everything we see and touch, so we try to photograph everything and everyone.
There is a complex array of emotions in your photographs. What are you trying to communicate?
We are trying to convey our life on the road through our photographs. We want to show the happy moments, the moments where we felt alone, and when we wanted to isolate ourselves. Although the images may seem pretty, we wanted to show what we experienced in an array of emotions of life on the road. Life was not a smooth ride and we tried to be as truthful as we could in our photographs.
Each image looks like an adventure. Can you share a story of one of your most indulgent ones?
The first photograph that comes to mind is the one we took a moment before we left New York to travel across the US. This photo for us marks the beginning of what ended up being an amazing adventure with friends. We feel this photograph speaks a lot about the trip and out adventures because it was not about any one in particular, the trip was about all of us and our friendship and support we gave each other. Although this picture is not a direct adventure, it was the one that started the adventure and got us on the road. During that photograph, we were in the mechanic receiving the van after we had a full check-up and tune to get us on the road. While the van was getting fixed, we were hanging around the shop eager to hit the road, and we snapped this photo right before leaving.
There is a fair amount of travelling done to document moments. Do you plan the route or just go with it?
We mapped out places where we wanted to visit. As we travelled on the road, our plans changed a bit because we would meet people who would recommend certain places and they shaped how the final map turned out.
Goodbye Horses. How did that come about? Well, Théo and Marvin were out one night and they heard the song Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus and they were singing it in French and it sounded great to them. The next day they told us about the experience and that they thought the name was a good title- and voila!
To be young and frivolous. How is that reality working out?
It is working out great actually, because we feel there is a time and place for everything. We work hard during the year to take some time off and just live carefree. Our lives are not completely frivolous, but there are times when we allow ourselves to live free and give in to the excitement of being young and sharing our love with those who surround us.
