Daniel Dale Johnston, genius songwriter and cartoon creator, lives his life through his broken dreams. Johnston has been diagnosed with bipolar disorderĀ and schizophrenia. Throughout his life these conditions have dilapidated his atmosphere. This past week during one of the most prestigious Art expositions in the world, Art Basel, I had the opportunity to meet and greet with Mr. Johnston himself. After walking 15 blocks to the hotel he was staying in I finally entered the room in which this humble hearted, incredibly talented being domiciled in. That same night he was to perform and exhibit his many years of drawings and songs at the grandest venue in Miami, Grand central. Johnston’s day consisted of a hand full of interviews, a trip to the comic book store, and an evening of nostalgic performances conducted by himself. His innocence and life story are entirely captivating. With songs like “True Love” and “King Kong” one would dub him one of the most ecletic bluesman of our century.
After having the opportunity to tune into a private interview and a live show, I can now say I have taken another step forward in life. Through his songs and his drawings Daniel is able to survive. Whether he wants to believe it or not he will be remembered and prevail for years and years to come.
