Skater, biker, 70’s rock and roller; the Christian Dada man encapsulates all three personae in the most luxurious and put-together of ways. The Japanese label, designed by Masanori Morikawa is influenced heavily by the concept of Dadaism- hence its name- celebrating imperfections and non-conformism. This is translated into the AW15 collection through a slick balance of fine, opulent detailing- such as exquisite embossed leather- and the deconstructed edge of ripped up knees and frayed hemlines. Balanced is the operative adjective here, achieved stylistically- borrowing elements from the 70s, skating and rock and roll- and culturally, marrying aspects from Eastern and Western fashion. Morikawa is not afraid of maximalism. Black is used in excess, giving a dark air of mystery to the season’s offerings, as are statement textures or oversized silhouettes. There is an undeniable swagger and devil-may-care appeal to Christian Dada, yet tradition and craftsmanship is never far behind.
