When a fashion designer frames a story for his collection, he usually chooses one concept to embody the vision. In contrast, Cy Choi’s Spring 2013 collection exhibits two differing themes. On one hand, the images of the lookbook portray the classic men’s form; with well-proportioned coats, form fitting outwear, and stream-lined suits and at the same time, the looks personify the new millennium; with oversized suits, asymmetrical cuts and Asian inspired shapes.
The juxtaposition displayed in the collection is very reminiscent of Korean society, which is Choi’s native country. Koreans live side by side with the lightning speed of 21st century technology and the traditions of old. It is common to see people in this country connected to all of the latest apple products yet still practicing the filial piety of Confucianism. Choi’s collection is a paradigm of this culture that embraces all of the changes that are happening in society yet still holds on to their traditions.
