At first glance, Daniel Palillo’s S/S ’15 pieces look like colourful reinventions of the creature from new horror film, The Babadook. The only thing frightening about the collection however, is how well the Finnish designer has managed to marry together the creative disciplines of art and fashion.
The garments are inspired by a series of Palillo’s own paintings, entitled “Paintings about the Fashion World.” The pieces of art work carry fashion-related monikers such as Client, Fat Hipster, and Street Style. Each painting is heavily surreal and vibrant, explaining why Palillo’s collection is so bright and eccentric.
In terms of graphic print, Palillo covers a diverse spectrum. Irregular lines meander across jumpers and trousers, whilst circle motifs are repeated throughout the collection. There’s even politically-charged imagery, incorporating both the peace sign and the anarchist symbol, whilst zip detailing and sewn-on pom poms add a jovial tone. The pieces are mainly relaxed casual wear comprised of jersey and cotton, and are all handmade. Palillo’s looks come complete with head masks, which resemble everything from a smiley face, to a rag doll, to a cartoon whale. It’s Picasso-esque abstraction played out on to clothing.
