The new collection “Print Voltage” from Portuguese designer David Catalan is so named because of the influences from the elements and symbology of power stations. Print is certainly high voltage on these pieces as both graphic and digital prints adorn trousers, t-shirts and jackets, as a nod to the strong and dramatic iron structures of power stations. Prints are symmetrical, geometric and in bold shades of blue, orange and red on a black and white canvas. This clever use of colour evokes associations with hazards and warnings. The overzise and slightly overblown proportions of bomber jackets and tops give the collection an 80s feel, which is heightened by the use of overlays where two parts are mixed into one – such as the achingly cool shirt/ singlet and the bomber jacket/ parka, both of which are highlights of the range.
