Founded in early 2012 by German designer Maria Gluck, HOWL has already developed a reputation for thoughtful and eco-friendly design and production. The brand’s Autumn/ Winter 2014 collection, entitled “Nomadic” employs the familiar minimal shapes and complex textures that the brand has started to become noticed for. Nomadic is a collection inspired by Winter, the darkness and hibernation. Maria Gluck’s designs (many of which are unisex or certainly unisex inspired) are tonally black, white, beige and grey. These shades are presented in organic and recycled materials, many of which are experimental, for example digital cut fabrics are placed with wood. Shirts are clean and crisp, and outerwear is particularly strong with interesting cuts that mean that they appear different in shape from every angle. The collection is on the whole, conceptual but still very contemporary.
Inherently minimal in its feel, the detailing of wood and other fabrics add a whimsical touch. The designer’s history and background in sculpture, as well as deconstruction, texture and pattern are all used in the construction of these pieces. Howl is synonymous with minimal shapes, elaborate texture and the use of innovative materials and the Autumn/ Winter range certainly continues this message.
