Emika, sound engineer and musician at large, has caused a stir with June release ‘DVA’. The new album explores mixing and, what can only be described as an electro sound, in an experimental and almost eerie way. There is something distinctly morbid about the album; it toys with this mellow and deep vocal- accompanying it with an extreme use of diverse instrumentation. This extreme serenity and unnatural blend of sound makes the album distinct and indescribable, it is a work of art. The hazy sounds of the track ‘She Beats’ blend into a synth high pitched and repetitive, which is somewhat reminiscent of a fast paced heartbeat (perhaps that is the inspiration for the song name and the track itself). The vocals alone represent Emika’s progression within her musicianship- her primary vocal skill is her ability to merge soft tones with this rugged and gruff powerful tone.
The album feels serene but ironically portrays sad and sometimes aggressive emotions. The use of sound manipulation has enabled Emika to maintain this overpowering control over our emotions and feelings, a hard thing for any musician to achieve. The Czech artist manages to beautify the origins within her voice and often likes to use orchestral sounds to compliment her melodic tone. This is particularly showcased in ‘Primary Colours’. Other tracks, like ‘Sleep With My Enemies’ and ‘Wicked Game’, use more studio produced and electronic/unnatural sounds. With an upcoming worldwide tour that intends to accommodate NYC, LA Prague, London and many other location’s need for her live sound, it looks like 2013 might just be Emika’s break through year.
