“Sexy” was how Warpaint described what they wanted their new, self-titled album to sound like, the follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut record The Fool. There are certainly hints of a new musical direction here, a deeper sense of sensuality, femininity, and lustfulness than their first record, displayed best on Hi with its oh-so-slow hypnotic singing and repetitive beats and on Biggy with its deep synths and background harmonies. However, therein lies a fundamental issue at the heart of this album – all the songs begin to sound the same, every tune is an almost carbon copy of the preceding one. Thankfully Warpaint picks up the tempo at the midpoint of the album, lifting its soul out of the slumber-like mood it was cultivating, but then it drops right back for the remainder, and ends with Son, the most downbeat of all the songs on show. Warpaint might have set out to hone a different sound this time round, which they have done to an extent, but on the whole they have created an album that is neither exploratory or compelling, a record that sticks far too close to their debut. Yes their first album was a truly enjoyable affair, but no one enjoys the same trick performed twice.
