Matthew Miller is a London wonder boy, known for his modish and edgy collections which draw inspiration from urban and rural settings. The whispers amongst the fashion pack were that Miller had ‘toned it down to sell’ with his AW13 showing (tongue in cheek perhaps in anticipation of such remarks, sweaters in the show were emblazoned with the slogan ‘Born to Fail’) but what we are really seeing here is a new maturity in a man who has become more comfortable in his own skin as a designer, and is naturally evolving in his own aesthetic.
What we can all agree on is that this monochrome collection with its bars of anarchic red splashed on shoes soles, jackets, oversized backpacks and knits (even the models hands!) is that Matthew Miller AW13 was HIGHLY wearable. So yes maybe it will be a commercial hit, but fashion is also a business, and in order for designers to stay in business, their collections have to be successful! Millers vision for AW13 is modish and sporty prep, a thoroughly London look for the cities rising generation of go getters who want clean minimalist clothing that still conveys some of that signature London rebellion. Cropped skinny trousers worn over collaborator Timberland’s iconic boots, shirts and sweaters paired with slim cut tailoring and classic men’s peacoats, parkas, super lightweight raincoats and biker jackets, all in a very modern cut hitting all the big AW13 trends with slick designs details such as hardware cuff detailing adding interest.
