Xander Zhou manages to be both an avant garde forward thinking menswear designer, whilst also keeping it eminently wearable. Something many of his contemporaries fail in. In a technotronic sci fi inspired collection entitled Hyperdrive, that referenced a cross section of genre film classics from Blade Runner to Batman ( Heath Ledger’s Joker make up!) and an epically done finale to the tune of The Empire Strikes Back, Zhou played brilliantly with, androgyny, his signature boxy proportions such as boxy outerwear and wide leg pants, re shaping forms and silhouettes, and also reinvention; adding some Velvet Goldmine glam rock into the Mos Eisley Cantina Disco. Zhou took his subversion of the classic male wardrobe to new heights, and yes it was a little “mish mash”, but as a journey into the male psyche, I rather think that was exactly his point.
