A warrior stands proud, confident and alert, fearing no man or woman who might cross their path at any point in time. David Koma’s modern day woman was strongly considered in the design and execution of this strong SS14 collection. Inspired by the disciplined nature of the samurai soldiers of Japan and the art of Kyudo, she walked the runway with pride and assurance, in cinch belts, high waist ¾ skirts in monochromatic, rectangular blocks and long, bold waistcoats with straight leg pants.
Although block shades of black and white dominated the runway, flashes of indigo, baby blue and nude did well in softening these otherwise, overpowering tones. A-Line skirts and dresses helped sculpt the waist while panels were unexpectedly linked by intricately lazer-cut strips. Beautiful wrap-dresses formed into sharp, diagonal hems and boob tubes became 3-D through Koma’s clever use of colour. The audience were often left wondering how certain panels were attached due to the random rectangular cut-outs on certain pieces.
The models and their outfits represented a strong minded, stable and confident woman with just enough skin on show. Remaining straight-forward and fearless throughout, she stands and dresses in a well thought out way; overall an accurate, visual representation of the art of ‘power-dressing’.
