This is a very lovely collection. Lovely first of all for its instant wearability: the look of the garments is very cool and will appeal to many a young fashionista. Also fantastic, however, for the subtle nods to our time, which is of course what one expects from great design. In this age of androgyny and ever-evolving ideals of sexual equality, Cadelano presents a beautifully simple editorial that shows his clothes on a boy and a girl. Not a particularly loud statement, but one bound up with timely and relevant significance nonetheless. Then – and a personal favourite touch of mine – are the frayed, raw hems, which hint poetically at that shift away from fantasy and toward reality, to which much of the creative world has recently assisted. To see both themes run through the collection together is perhaps the loveliest part. For fashion like this – beautifully uncomplicated and unfettered by distracting bells and whistles – is confirmation that those modern ideals are truly being cemented as our collective reality.
