Berlin is one of a favorite cities, a hive of raw creativity and often underlooked fashion talent. In anticipation of Chasseur’s inaugural attendance of Berlin Fashion Week, we look at the SS14 of cult menswear label Sopopular. The Sopopular aesthetic melds the classicism of contemporary tailoring with edgy yet minimalist Berlin streetwear, showcasing the influences of designer Daniel Blechman’s own background; born in Israel, bred in Berlin, schooled in London. For SS14, the Sopopular collection, accompanied by the gorgeous ‘Black Hole Sun’ fashion film, showcases tectonically clean, geometrical and clear-cut styles created with high-quality fabrics such as leather and suede, inspired by 1990s music (yep, you guessed it, the film is indeed named after Sound Garden’s 1994 album) and the Japanese architect Tadao AndÅ. A vaguely sinister (in a good way) sense of utopian totalitarianism runs through the collection, reminisce of films such as Gattaca and achieved through futuristic design details layed on a lean mean silhouette. The collection is a strong offering, and one that confirms Blechman and Sopopular as one of our ‘ones to watch’ both in Berlin and beyond.
