The delicate and realistic artistic creations of Alex Russell Flint maintain elements of renaissance and historic paintings. The brush stroke highlights form in a very retrospective and intricate manner, yet Flint offers a slightly contemporized version of what is artistically beautiful. His paintings demonstrate still life, portraiture and landscape in an almost photographic manner. They are, more often than not, visually enticing, contributing textural elements and leaving the eye to linger over the use of highlights and tone demonstrated within even small patches of his paintings.
The simple process of recreating a pair of tatty old converse shoes has been, not so much glamorised, but morphed and softened in a realistic manner. Flint manages to beautify the most mundane and every day objects.
In many of his more recent paintings, he places the female models in a slightly worn and aged looking room, with a green rugged wall as a backdrop. This rugged setting almost works as a contradiction- beautifying the model in a subtle manner. Flint’s brushstroke gently highlights small details within the human form: small facial details, strands of hair, muscles…he encompasses it all. He cleverly uses this green backdrop as a background template for his website.
Pastel shading helps to create a realistic perception of every day life. His portrait work could be mistaken as a fashion statement in ways, but he focuses more upon creating form in a beautified manner, defining facial structure and the delicacy of the female form. Although he primarily uses dull colours within his work, many of his paintings use merely tone- black, white and greys- to represent form and focus less on natural colour/shading.
Of course, he has used a collection of other materials in a similar soft manner within his art work. He uses pencil: often cross hatching and shading to add a 3 dimensional and textural perception to the work. But alongside his beautified images, he also represents age within many of his paintings. He likes to highlight wrinkles and other aging characteristics in a flattery manner to beautify the aging process, leaving a positive stamp upon this natural human development.
