German artist Isabelle Wenzel creates dynamic and surreal studies of the female form in motion using just her legs, a camera and a self-timer. Exploring the connection between photography, sculpture and performance Isabelle’s pins take on a life of their own as she contorts her body to create a series of hyper realistic self-portraits. Obsessed from a young age with the responsiveness of the human body, Isabella trained as a promising acrobat until the age of sixteen; an indispensible skill which infuses her work with vivacity and drive. In order to avoid distraction from the focal point of her work, the legs, Isabella constructs the images to be deliberately faceless; suspending body between subject and object. Whilst the images may seem wholly contrived, the use of an automatic shutter release allows for incredible spontaneity where the artist’s quick thinking and strength come into play to demonstrate compelling dynamism. Each thematically unique series sees high heels fly and eyebrows raise as Isabella challenges the overly sexualised portrayal of the female form.
