With many collections being presented in countless runway shows around the globe, its seems all too easy to lose the appreciation for each creation. Florals, colorblocking, and the combination of different textures have been presented in dozens of ways. While the collections are still aesthetically appealing, it is difficult to come across something truly different; to find something that goes against the grain. Luckily, the industry has Tom Van Der Borght (TVDB).
TVDB returns to the world of fashion after a short career in the field of social works. He graduated from Stedelijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Sint Niklaas (in other words, an art school in Belgium) and mastered sewing from his mother. TVDB is pushing the boundaries of traditional beauty, and by doing so, is creating his own standard of beauty. His AW 13 collection is striking, to say the very least; combining sublimation prints, digital knits, with a hint of neatness and extra volume. Individually, the pieces are very wearable and when worn together create a spectacular uniform. The collection refuses to be slain by the opinion of a dull society and we give thanks to TVDB for challenging the norms in today’s culture.
