The London Collections: Men shows came with bagfuls of seventies swagger this season. It is unclear as to why the throwback was so prevalent among so many collections, but it is fair to say that certain designers did it better than others. Jonathan Saunders’ efforts were fantastically successful, pulling on the good bits of 1970s sartorial staples and leaving the less desirable elements where they belong: in the past. His SS15 colours were fantastic and worked well with the jacquards and metallics, which themselves complemented the uncomplicated silhouette and sportswear vibe: it was sports luxe, which we all know we have continued to love for a little while now, at its best. Cleverly, Saunders opted to show his menswear collection with his womenswear resort offering, admitting that the two collections had always gone hand in hand, almost as counterparts to each other. This was a particularly smart and successful move from the designer, who was thus able to offer a very whole vision of his brand and who its people were. I know that I for one would love to hang out with them.
