It is always a ringing endorsement when established musical acts want to work with you on future projects before you even have an album in your armoury, and North-West London songstress Basheba would find herself in just that enviable position when Rudimental came a knockin’ interested in a future collaboration. Really it should come as no surprise though, as Basheba has been working on her sound since she was fourteen; the hard work and dedication now beginning to reap rewards. Describing her evocative narrative approach to songwriting, Basheba says… “A song is nothing without a story. I am a storyteller, I just tell my stories through song”. It is that very style of storytelling that has made the industry sit up and take notice.
Just after the release of her debut single ‘No More’, Basheba’s sound began to cause a stir and the single went on to receive endorsement from MTV Base, 1Xtra and SBTV. Basheba is now on the brink of releasing her second single ‘Dirty Love (Your Love)’, an evocative, atmospheric track featuring drum & bass rhythms and swirling strings. She enlisted the help of old school friend Jordan Reece to lend vocals to the song and his voice subtly blends with Basheba’s own on the track, which comes accompanied by a dark, moody, cinematic video directed by Luke Nugent and Joe Beverley. The song is sure to gain her even more attention both inside and outside of the music industry; but Basheba is not content with just making music. Plans are afoot to launch her very own clothing label later in the year and work is well and truly underway.
CHASSEUR reckons one thing is for sure in 2014 – if you ain’t gonna be listenin’ to Basheba, you might just be wearin’ her.
‘Dirty Love’ will be released on June 22.
