South Africa’s re-birth shows no sign of slowing down and from the ashes of a torn nation comes Afro futurism (yes it’s a thing) courtesy of Spoek Mathambo. Taking the novel idea of making a mix-tape inspired by the year of his birth (1985), the album is a booty shaking, soul – stirring mix of native South African instruments and futuristic electronic pulses. BB James, Yadi, Cherry B, DJ Wool, Seye and Fannie Sosa all collaborate on the tracks, giving the album its unique feel. With that slew of talent it would be easy for the venture to fall under its own weight, but thankfully the foundations are strong. Escape From 85′ becomes a joyous celebration of South African culture. We Can Dance is the stand – out track, a quick tempo, hand – clapping, piece of music which you can imagine young South Africans (or the older generation) dancing to in their house before a Saturday night on the tiles. There are American references to be found such as the Elm Street reference on Cherry Moon, or the title of one song, Like A Virgin. However, the whole album is never overly influenced by America, it is distinctly South African, whether it be the native drums or backing vocals. The entire album drips with the joys of life, evidence of Spoek’s pride in his home nation and the renewed spirit that it has found in recent decades. If it is the shape of things to come from South Africa then the whole world will surely be watching, and listening!
