If you’ve happened across Kazimir Malevich’s work; you will understand the direct correlation between his art pieces and the S/S15 collection from Mai Gidah. Malevich was a Russian artist who specialised in abstract creations and was a pioneer of the Suprematist movement. Mai Gidah’s pieces, alike Malevich’s paintings, are rich with geometrical experimentation. Shirts spattered with non concentrical circles are paired with pinstripe trousers: for an optically challenging combination. Mis-matching seems to be a prevalent theme: as an amalgamation of fabrics are used to construct each garment. Featherlight satin, block PVC and translucent organza make for highly sensory clothing. The colours used seemed to draw on Malevich’s work as well. Punchy red, gunmetal grey and twilight navy add impact to each design. Throughout the collection; silhouettes appear quite staunch and bold. A touch of delicacy and effeminacy is added to certain pieces, by the incorporation of pussy bow detailing. Fundamentally playful: Mai Gidah succeeds in creating wearable material compositions.
