German artist Bernhard Handick is not only a celebrated freelance photographer but also an excellent mixed media artist and art director. Boasting a number of impressive shots, his portfolio is both exciting to look at and hard to look away from. A collection to look out for is the 13-piece set entitled ‘Masterclass’ where the piece is halved diagonally with one side branding a black & white image of modern-day stars (from Marilyn and Michael to Frida Kahlo and Charlie Chaplin) and the other, of pre-20th century paintings of known, historical characters and figures with their torso’s alone visible. His pieces are cool, contemporary and extremely vibrant providing the viewer with a dose of fresh, original art to take away with them.
From digital manipulation, collages and blurs to nude references, rips and distortions, his pieces don’t aim to flatter, but through sheer bluntness, strangely become beautiful and intriguing to look at. There is no limit to what secret meaning there might be behind each piece, but there is no doubt that they all do well in making the mind wander. Open to exciting collaborations and other creative journeys, his next project is always hard to determine.
