Carl Melegari, who is based in Bristol, is an oil painter who exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair. Exploring figure and form he paints with oil paints as he believes for them to be the master of all wet mediums. After studying at Art College in Bower Ashton, Bristol, he is now a professional artist. Throughout his work the study of figures is the main theme, however occasionally he will mix that up a bit in search of a challenge.
What is it about the quality of Oil Paints that attracts you as an artist?
Oils offer me the most challenging way to produce a painting. I can explore the versatility of the pigment and paint; the thickness I can achieve through glazing, layering and manipulating the medium can provide a wide range of various effects.
What fascinates you about people that drives your want to paint portraiture?
The challenge of capturing emotion and feeling by using paint as a medium.
What is the most valuable lesson you have learnt during your career as a painter?
Time, there just isn’t enough time in a day!
What is it about painting that gets you out of bed in the morning to do more?
I can’t really explain why but I guess it is an obsession, almost a curse!
Do you try to convey a message through your art? If so, what?
My paintings do have meanings to them depending on my mood, but they are personal to me. However, you can read into them what you want, so the message is your own interpretation.
What is art to you?
Art is an expression of yourself.
Which artist do you admire the most?
It would have to be Morandi.
