Ovid’s Metamorphoses is one of the most influential pieces of literary work in history. His narrative poem is steeped in mythology and has inspired creatives such as J. W. Waterhouse and William Shakespeare. Miami born Central St Martins womenswear alumni, Gabriella Marina Gonzalez, has drawn upon the tale of Ceryx and Alcyone for her S/S ’15 collection. The story tells of the punishment of the lovers, who foolishly compare themselves to the great Gods Jupiter and Juno. Ceryx is drowned in a storm and Alcyone leaps in to the Sea in an attempt to save him. Following the theme of transition, both are turned in to Kingfishers.
Specialising in obscure handmade luxury accessories: it is easy to cite the correlation between the tale and Gonzalez’s work. The designer seems to have drawn upon the Sea element to create her fluid pieces. A malleable perspex, in a ribbon like shape, bends and curves to form a bag, a bracelet, a necklace, a pair of glasses and even a set of shoes. Gonzalez has structured the pieces to flow away from the body; much alike the form of waves. The choice to use a clear material again echoes the properties of Seawater. It is a fantastical, experimental collection: in line with Gonzalez’s vision to create highly theatrical pieces.
