It startled me at first. Well, the video that is. It kind of makes me think of a practical strategy going in- the egg or the chicken question. Which came first? Except with this video, which element was the primary one? Music or visuals? Do you work with or between things? Does it inspire first or collaborate? It always gets me thinking. However in this case, TwoDaysToAlaska, a producer dealing with the combination of piano, cello and guitar, as well as Pahnl who has created an amalgamation of street art, have worked together. Not between, before or after, just together.
The music itself drips with an ambient nature, whereby music titbits of different genres take hold and become something completely original. Inspired by the likes of Bonobo, Temptations and Sigur Ros, this track extracts all the elements of such artists. It’s like the inner workings of the brain, which match perfectly to the artistry of Pahnl. Together their representation has become a fundamental mood of being, without looking to the past or present to understand.
The imagery is conclusive of many avenues for different people. Nostalgic when faced with colour and composition like this, I imagined and felt without pushing myself. At times, it looks like there are molecules moving through the intricate depths of a microscope. In other moments, it seems like droplets of water have been caught up together after a heavy rainstorm and have found a surface to merge together. There are even seconds when I think of coloured balloons being popped on a screen.
The entirety reminds me of when I was a kid using paints as my medium, and how I would splash a couple of colours on the one side of an A3 page and fold it over in order to create a duplicate splatter on the other side. Oh, the possibility of creating in a more innocent mindset.
“You could say I see surfaces and spots in the streets as panels to drop my characters into but I might be romanticizing the process a little too much.”- Pahnl
The visual narrative, sitting side by side with TwoDaysToAlaska is a feeling you want to experience repeatedly. Releasing their debut album this year by Cult Classic Records and willing to do something different, visit their page and feel something.
