Working your way up an industry filled with so much antagonism can turn into quite a challenge, many are unable to face. Thankfully that was not the case with 19-year-old Matthew JA Payne, whose strong vision, passion for photography and relentless determination led him to work alongside some of the greatest names from both the fashion and music scenes including those of Kanye West, Cassie Ventura, Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne . Let’s see what he has to say about it all.
Despite your young age, you have already managed to work with many great names. How did you make that happen?
I never would of imagined having the opportunity to work with such great names at just the age of 19. It took me sometime to get involved with the industry but once it started it rocketed fast. I was refused from taking photography at college due to my grades, I was told “without grades you can’t be successful” I shortly dropped out and focused on what I loved doing, I began working with modeling agencies, building up my portfolio, attending London based magazine shoots and assisting other great photographers. Over time I had created a great relationship within the industry and landed a job at West Brands. I worked alongside Kanye West for 5 months during his A/W collection, and had the opportunity to go to Paris Fashion week where I continued to photograph other amazing artists and top models.
I strongly feel that my journey hasn’t even begun, I have so many ideas to share and a lot more work to showcase. If my story is any type of inspiration for young photographers starting in the industry I would like to say that you’ll grow to learn that you can’t let negative criticism get you down. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, just focus on what you love doing. work hard, aim high.
From all the collaborations you had so far, which one would you go as far as to call your absolute favourite? Why?
Kanye West during PFW as I got to meet and photograph top models such as Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss and many more.
In your opinion, do you consider skills or ambition to be more important when it comes to being successful in the fashion industry?
I believe ambition is very important. Of course skills are needed however I feel that if you have the eye and passion for it, you can make it work.
Your portfolio mainly consists of fashion/glamour shots. Were you always fascinated by this particular aspect of photography? If yes, which photographers have influenced your craft so far?
I’ve always had an eye for fashion, I love being surrounded by creative people. It’s constantly expanding and changing which I love being a part of. I wouldn’t say I’ve been influenced by certain photographers, everyone has different aspects of work that I love and I’ve tried to keep my style open.
In what ways has living in one of the world’s greatest fashion capitals affected your style, photography-wise?
London is an amazing city, the trends are constantly changing and I feel that it reflects in photog-raphy.
If you had the opportunity to shoot a rather unconventional concept which one would that be and why?
Cruella De Vil .. she’s fierce!
What happens next?
Expect a lot more creative set ups, cinematic, editorial and film work. I want my photos to become a distinctive work of art.
