As an idea, fetish is really quite interesting. And from a fashion perspective, it’s interesting to see designers put together looks that brazenly reference established fetishistic notions. DSTM’s SS15 collection sees designer Jen Gilpin build on her sharp aesthetic, which hones the female form with elaborate linear work. Straps, buckles and harnesses frame the body for an air of instant objectivity, complemented by textiles that are often sexualized: leathers, sheer chiffons and high-shine latex. What’s most effective then is the contrast of these sculptural designs with the looser silhouettes, constructed from soft swathes of fabric that drape elegantly around the body as opposed to fitting closely to its form. Either way, it’s all about the body. Or rather a certain perspective of the body: one which glorifies, so as to elevate it to something of a spectacle – sexually energized and erogenous in its entirety.
