Art comes in many forms and can serve very different purposes. Some works are made to inspire, other to shock or provoke and there are also those which don’t quite have a clear motive or purpose. Gazing upon the latest project of Gigi Ben Artzi and Loral Amir, one can easily understand that it’s all about making a statement. Composed of photographs and a 16mm short film, ‘Downtown Divas’ focuses on the popular ‘Heroin Chic’ fashion look but taking things a little too literal, it features real drug addicts and sex workers dressed in designer clothing from Alexander Wang, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and more. The visuals are as raw as they can get with cracked faces and bruised body parts revealing signs of abuse. The accompanying video, which is essentially a compilation of mini interviews, provides a more personal look into the lives of these women as it gives them the opportunity to openly talk about them. Though many big questions are left unanswered, with each story we get to delve deeper and deeper into a transparent world where girlish fantasies blend with the harshest of realities; those of addiction and prostitution. A thought-provoking and extremely well-composed body of work by two very talented creatives.
