London-based Tom Wrigglesworth and Matt Robinson (aka Wriggles and Robins) started off as a creative team at Fallon. Today, they are one of the most promising and fresh director duos with works that keep blowing up our minds. From the short film ‘La Mer De Pianos’ to the ‘Life Drawing’ commercial for ‘The Book Club’ in London, Tom and Matt have proven their skills and the originality of their ideas. However, the moment we thought they had -quite successfully- explored every hidden corner of the strange worlds of filming and animation, Wriggles and Robins come to prove us wrong. Dead wrong.
No more 3D computer graphics, no more rendering, no more animation software whatsoever. This time, the directional duo only used breaths, volumetric lighting techniques and thin, cold air. Collaborating with the band Travis for their second single of their upcoming album ‘Where You Stand’, Wriggles and Robins decided to project the animated story of the clip into the breaths of the band, in an environment of -1oC. The results are amazing, both in visual and in artistic terms.
In only 4:27 minutes, the duo managed to capture and present in one of the most original ways the concepts of creation, effort, playful human side and self-confrontation. From the scenes with the runner who lives exclusively on the band’s breath to the moment Fran Healy is singing, creating his “breath double”, Wriggles and Robins literally worked their magic on camera. We could only agree on the fact that these intriguing visual effects combined with the meaningful lyrics and the liberating melody of ‘Moving’ compose a success recipe both for Tom and Matt and Travis.
