There is a sense of anticipation. We feel it, touch it and breathe it. It’s palpable. These are times when nothing feels certain, as our faith is shaken and our conscience rattled. Nothing remains the same. Creativity perhaps can be our liberator. Through it we learn. By being resourceful, we challenge our surroundings. It makes us reflect. Most and foremost, it celebrates our independence. A designer, never lost for a subtle comment on society, is NICKLAS KUNZ, who definitely has not been a stranger to these pages. For his latest SS16 offering, Nicklas takes us into a world of repentance. An intimate depiction of a society in turmoil. Police brutality, violence and racial hatred. Nicklas aims to provide a counterweight in menswear, this naturally, with a healthy dose of reflection, spurring the debate towards equality and respect for our fellow man. The new SS16 collection is rich in sturdy jersey pieces, with mesh appliqués, ribbed detailing and colour-blocked shoulder patches. Loose sweats and cropped pants, are paired with tailored leather coats, which are the designer’s strong suit. It is this combination between Brooklyn streetstyle references, a dash of sultry hiphop and clean masculine tailoring, that make his work freshly dynamic.
